Sardines - Non-Dairy, Non-Nut

Sardines. Check them out. Sustainable, cheap, and really high in omega-3s. If you don't like their fishy taste, mix them up with some homemade mayonnaise (much easier than you think), diced carrots and celery, salt and pepper, and lemon juice. Maybe a pinch of tumeric. Spoon some on top of cucumber slices. If you don't have time to make mayonnaise, try just mustard and olive oil.

  1. A tip if you're making your own mayo: taste your oil first for freshness. The oil can really make or break the mayo in terms of flavor. Also, if you're using a hand whisk to make it, be prepared for tired arms! It's doable but a hefty workout.

  2. Canned Alaskan salmon is cheaper, more sustainable, and American. My guess is that the Alaskan fisheries are subject to less water pollution than Mediterranean sardine fisheries as well.
    And ladies... it is pink!

  3. Sardines I've been getting are from Norway. I will try the Alaskan salmon. I like salmon better anyway.
